The National Executive Council (NEC) is the supreme decision making body of the Union. It is made up of the members of the Central Working Committee The National President, Deputy National President, National Secretary the eight Zonal Vice Presidents, the National Financial Secretary, the National Internal Auditor, the National Trustees and ex-officio members as well as Chairmen and Secretaries of the 36 state councils and Abuja (FCT).

 

The Union operates at the National, Zonal, State and Chapel levels. The eight zones are A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H in line with the eight geopolitical areas of the national.

• Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa with headquarters at Kaduna.
• Lagos, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Ekiti States with headquarters at Ibadan
• Anambra, Enugu, Abia, Ebonyi, Imo with headquarters at Enugu
• Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, FCT, Niger with headquarters at Jos.
• Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi with headquarters at Gombe.
• Port Harcourt, Cross-River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Edo, Delta with headquarters Port Harcourt.

 

The Union also has three (3) established affiliate associations. These are:

• Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) headed by the National Chairman
• National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) also headed by a National Chairman.
• Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE)

 

These associations operate under the constitution of the union. In particular, NAWOJ was established in 1988 to promote gender development in the NUJ.
